For the first time in 44 years, two dynamic football programs of the South Shore that are nearest in proximity faced off in a non-exhibition matchup. The defending Division III Long Island champion Sayville Golden Flashes hosted the defending Division IV Long Island champ Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms in a long-awaited meeting for the supremacy of Division IV.
In the opening quarter, Ryan Batterberry chugged 12 yards for a rushing touchdown under four minutes into the scuffle to get Sayville on the board. His brother elevated the lead, when Connor Batterberry sprinted to the end zone on a 39-yard touchdown followed by a Matthew Damone PAT.
Late in the opening frame, Bayport-Blue Point’s offense got going. Josh Franchak bolted down the sideline deep into Sayville territory on a long rushing play that took the Phantoms to the goal line. A few plays later on fourth down and inches in the closing minute of the period, Franchak barreled into the end zone to cross the plane for a half-dozen points for the Phantoms, and with 25 seconds remaining it was 13-7 Sayville.
In the second quarter, Jake Arato snatched a touchdown pass from Frankie Hanley, a 25-yarder ensued by a Damone extra point. Later in the second, Cole Canterella made a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown and afterwards ran six yards for a rushing touchdown and it was 34-6. In the waning seconds until the halftime intermission, Tommy Steyert slammed a 38-yard field goal and the score was 34-9 at the end of 24 minutes.
In the triadic frame, Rodney Magee made an interception for Bayport-Blue Point, but it was a scoreless third quarter on both sides. In quarter No. 4, Matt Bachmore slung a two-yard touchdown toss to Brayden Waldbauer for a Bayport-Blue Point touchdown.
Hanley threw another touchdown pass to Arato late in the game for the final score of the evening. The final score was Sayville 40, Bayport-Blue Point 15.
Sayville plays their next game at home on Friday vs. Kings Park while BBP will host Elwood-John Glenn this Friday.
