Floyd girls lacrosse talented and balanced

Posted

A year after securing 10 victories and qualifying for the Suffolk Class A playoffs, William Floyd girls lacrosse got in the win column for the first time in 2026 with a 10-6 triumph over visiting Longwood last Friday.

Freshman Riley Meyer had four goals and one assist, senior Samantha Seaman added a hat trick, and senior star attacker Emma DiMaio scored twice and assisted on another to lead the Colonials’ offense.

“We’re happy with the win,” fourth-year coach Nicole Alesi said. “We treat every opponent the same. We’re focused on one game at a time and don’t really discuss the postseason. These girls push each other to get better every day. If we execute and learn from not only the losses but the wins, the postseason will take care of itself.”

Floyd’s playoff hopes will be led by All-County returnees DiMaio, Ava Tiedemann and Caiden Widecki. All three are captains.

DiMaio is a Stony Brook University commit who entered this season with more than 160 career assists and a pair of All-County campaigns on her resume. In 2025, she had 38 goals and 42 assists. She had 30 assists as an eighth grader, 47 as a freshman, and 45 as a sophomore. “She’s a complete playmaker and our go-to attacker who’s lefty but is excellent on both sides,” Alesi said. “She’s aggressive to the cage and makes smart decisions.”

Tiedemann, a senior midfielder bound for LIU, takes the majority of faceoffs and is another two-time All-County selection. “Ava is very talented and dynamic,” Alesi said. “She’s a fierce two-way competitor who works so hard on and off the fiend.”

Widecki, a junior, anchors the defense, along with sophomore Khloe DiMaio. The coach described Widecki as “tall, fast and aggressive, and great in transition.”

The Colonials have experienced talent in goal with third-year starter Julia Hipperling, a senior with quick reflexes and strong communication skills. “She puts a ton of work in during the offseason and in-season,” Alesi said.

Junior Riley Wiegand (17 goals, 24 assists last spring) is the offensive quarterback behind the cage and is committed to LIU with Tiedemann. “Riley has exceptional offensive vision and is a tremendous feeder,” Alesi said. Senior Natalie Samlihan (16 goals) is another returning starting attacker.

In the midfield with Tiedemann, Seaman and fellow senior Jayla Pimentel bring speed and the ability to be dynamic at both ends of the field, Alesi said. Meyer is another important two-way midfielder who saw significant minutes a year ago. “She anticipates so well and is a key on the draw circle,” said Alesi, who is assisted by Krystal Burke and Paige Sherlock.

Twenty teams make up Suffolk Division I, and the schedule is grueling. The Colonials will face both Sachem schools—East and North, respectively, at home, April 9 and 14, both at 4:30 p.m.
