Wind farm cables proposed at Smith Point Beach

Sunrise Wind Farm has proposed its project off the coast of Montauk in 2018, but there are still some kinks to work out, like where the transmission cable will make landfall.

The newest proposal for the cable’s landfall at Smith Point Beach in Shirley would ensure a closer run on land to the Holbrook Substation run by Long Island Power Authority than previous proposals. With Smith Point Beach being the southernmost point of William Floyd Parkway, the proposal outlines voltage boxes being placed alongside William Floyd Parkway and eventually making its way westward to Holbrook.

“The transmission cable will go from the wind turbines under the seabed to the proposed landing at Smith Point Beach in Brookhaven,” said a spokesperson for Sunrise Wind. “We proposed that it would interconnect at the Holbrook Substation.”

Legis. Rudy Sunderman and other relevant local officials were present at a meeting Tuesday morning to discuss the proposed landfall of the transmission cable at Smith Point Beach.

The wind farm proposed approximately 30 miles east of Montauk has the energy potential to generate 880 megawatts of power. It is a 50/50 partnership between Ørsted, a Danish energy company, and Eversource, the largest energy company in New England, with support from Con Edison and the New York Power Authority.

Sunrise Wind will be holding a virtual open house at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16.
