William Floyd grad inducted to WVU hall of fame

Lisa Stoia, a native of Shirley and a William Floyd graduate, was named to the 29th class of honorees in the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame. Stoia was inducted into the William Floyd Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.

Stoia is a senior associate head coach of the WVU women’s soccer team. Stoia helped guide WVU — her alma mater — to multiple Big 12 and Big East titles, as well as to 12 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and the 2016 NCAA College Cup Final. In 2018 Stoia helped the Mountaineers reach another title, as WVU claimed the Big 12 Soccer Championship title in November with a 3-0 showing at the league tournament, finished by a win over Baylor in the title match. WVU finished the season with a 15-4-4 mark and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, according to the university’s website.

Stoia earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management from WVU in 2005 and her master’s of business administration from Jacksonville in 2007.

During her playing career with WVU, Stoia earned Big East Midfielder of the Year honors in 2002 for leading West Virginia to its first regular season championship. She also assisted on 10 of West Virginia’s record-breaking 53 goals in 2003, tying her for the season record, according to WVU. Stoia was a NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz second team All-American in 2002 as a junior.

Stoia continued in her senior season, breaking the season assist record she had tied the season before on her way to becoming West Virginia’s all-time assists leader with 33. She became the first midfielder in Big East history to earn midfielder of the year honors in consecutive seasons by winning the award for the second time in 2003. Due to her record in 2003, Stoia earned first team All-America honors from Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA. Stoia also earned NSCAA/adidas third team All–Mid-Atlantic region and Big East co-Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman in 2000, according to WVU.
