Local basketball teams to compete in postseason

It was a miracle season for William Floyd, whose boys basketball team had an undefeated regular season at 20-0 and whose girls team went 19-1. Each won the Division I regular-season crown.

But the Colonials aren’t the only local basketball teams from our area in the playoffs and hoping for a deep run in the postseason.

Here’s a look at the teams.

Boys

William Floyd

Regular season record:

20-0 (16-0 in League 1)

Leading scorers: Juwuan Smith (15 ppg), Jermaine King (10.5 ppg)

Floyd finished the regular season undefeated and in first place in League 1, which is one of Suffolk’s toughest conferences. They head into the postseason as No. 2 seed and one of the favorites to compete for a county championship. They host North Babylon on Friday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m.

Patchogue-Medford

Regular season record:

14-6 (11-5 in League 1)

Leading scorers: Angel Redding (17.5 ppg), Matt Eichorn (13.4 ppg)

Pat-Med made massive strides this season under first-year coach Tim Trava, posting the most league wins for the school (11) since 1977-78.

But the Raiders struggled down the stretch ending the season on a three-game losing streak with a loss to Walt Whitman and double-digit losses to Floyd and Brentwood.

For the Raiders, a No. 5 seed, to make a deep playoff run, they’ll need consistent scoring from their big three of Redding, Eichorn and Isaiah Gilliam (12.6 ppg). They play at Commack on Friday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m.   

Bellport

Regular season record:

9-11 (8-8 in League 3)

Leading scorers: Sean Glynn (15.7 ppg), Joel Ferebee (10.6 ppg)

This season was a rebuilding year for the Clippers who lost last season’s leading scorer Samir Bell (24 ppg) to graduation.

Still, Bellport, a No. 8 seed, won the eight conference games required to make the postseason and heads into the playoffs with a potent offense anchored by Glynn and 6-foot, 6-inch Ferebee, one of Suffolk’s top big men. They host East Islip on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.

Girls

William Floyd

Regular-season record:

19-1 (15-1 in League 1)

Leading scorers: Shy Hawkins (22.2 ppg), Kayla Gilmore (16.9 ppg)

The Colonials, a No. 2 seed, won their second consecutive regular-season League 1 crown and head into the playoffs as a favorite to win the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs.

Few teams have as balanced a scoring attack as Lutheran High-transfer Hawkins and 1,000-point career scorers Gilmore and Jacky Sutherland (13.4 ppg). The Colonials host the North Babylon-Longwood winner on Saturday, Feb. 24 at  noon.

Patchogue-Medford

Regular-season record:

13-7 (10-6 in League 1)

Leading scorers: Diamond Pertillar (21.5 ppg), Alexis Bulson-Cuozzo (9.8 ppg)

The Raiders, a No. 5 seed, make their second consecutive playoff appearance after huge wins against powerhouse teams like Ward Melville and Bayport-Blue Point. They play at Northport on Saturday, Feb. 24 at noon.

Bellport

Regular-season record:

14-6 (10-6 in League 3)

Leading scorers: Autumn Simon (15.7 ppg), Brynn Johnsen (14.5 ppg)

The Clippers, under second-year coach Rynese Smith, reeled off consecutive wins against Centereach and West Babylon and will be making their first playoff appearance in several years. With Simon’s play in the post and Johnsen’s outside shooting, the Clippers could go far in the playoffs. The Clippers, a No. 5 seed, play at Comsewogue on Friday, Feb. 23 at noon.
