Patchogue-Medford could not get much going on Saturday against a sinister William Floyd defense in the second round of the Long Island Division 1 Tournament. The fourth-ranked Raiders struggled throughout the 48-6 loss to the Colonials on a cold, windy 1 p.m. outing at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach.
The Colonials’ defensive success paved the way for their offense and set them up in great field position early in the game. After the first drive for the Raiders broke down and expired, resulting in a short field for William Floyd followed by a quick score, the Colonials did not look back and rode the momentum all game.
A 75-yard rushing touchdown later in the first quarter marked the first clue this game may replicate most others this season for top-ranked Floyd. The Colonials tacked on two more scores before halftime, and the same continued throughout the third quarter.
Suffering a 48-6 loss, the Raiders simply looked outmatched in a game where they seldom crossed the 50-yard line on offense. Pat-Med’s season comes to a close against the reigning state champions, who are also undefeated this season.
William Floyd prepares for the Suffolk County Division 1 Championship against the third-ranked Longwood Lions at Stony Brook University on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
Sitting at 9-2, Longwood routed Sachem East on Friday 14-12 in a nailbiter where Sachem East had all the momentum and all the points in the second half. Sachem East versus Floyd on Oct. 5 was the only regular-season matchup on Floyd’s schedule that ended in a one-score game.
The Colonials hope to reclaim the championship and earn such in perfect fashion.
